Resize avatars

There is a problem with the avatar, if a user uploads a photo, for example 640x320 pixels, the system does not has the ability to resize the photo to the ideal size for an avatar. This causes the image is distorted and the loading time of page to increase a lot.
Any solution? Maybe some extra plugin or updates of it? -
