Avatar Settings Overridden by WP-Answers

I have avatars enabled in Settings > Discussion, and set at Mystery Man. Regardless of the setting, WP-Answers is using the Wavatars.

I would also like to know more about how to change this. I have tinkered with the avatar coding for months and can't figure out how to override the Wavatars. Frankly, they are a bit scary.... ;) But seriously, they don't fit in with my theme and I would like to add custom default avatars. Any help would be much appreciated.
